We are always on the lookout for people willing to train to be a lifesaver at North Palm Beach. North Palm Beach Surf Club is located at one of the best locations on Sydney's Northern Beaches.
North Palm Beach members are responsible for looking after one of the largest patrol area's in Sydney with one of the smallest clubs in Sydney. This combination has ensured the club has always been at the forefront in surf lifesaving techniques and the introduction of the best technologies available in order to keep the beach as safe as possible.
North Palm Beach believes in equal opportunity for all and abhors discrimination of any kind. We welcome members of any age, gender, creed, cultural background or religous beliefs. However certain age restrictions have been set by Surf Life Saving Australia as a minimum age for commencement of Surf Life Saving Awards. North Palm Beach conducts junior programmes (under 12 years of age) as well as training for the Surf Rescue Certificate (ages 12-15) and Bronze Medallion (age 15+) and for numerous other awards. We actively encourage our members to train and use our equipment and make our equipment available to suitaby qualified personnel on most days (including outside patrol days and during winter) Surf Life Saving Awards are standardised by Surf Life Saving Australia are are therefore recognised by any Surf Club within Australia and overseas. Awards are often recognised by Employers, WorkCover and can be used in conjunction with non Surf Life Awards such as the Duke of Edinburugh Award.
The club used UHF radios to cover the vast distance, introduced a “roving patrol” (where members walked the beach, away from the traditional flags), and also were the first Surf Club to own a Four Wheel Drive and use it as an integral part of patrolling the beach. The Club’s 4 wheel drive vehicle has become the standard for a Lifesaving 4WD. This includes outfitting the truck with flashing lights, loudspeaker, two way radio and reverse warning beeper.
North Palm Beach is very strong in Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs) and was one of the first clubs to own a IRB, the club takes great pride in fixing and maintaining, not only their motors and boats, but also the surrounding clubs as well. The club motor room has a drill press, air compressor, welder and a full range of tools for maintenance. With possibly the best set up club for IRB maintenance, it is no wonder the Club has members that are on the Australian and New South Wales IRB panels. These members also scrutineer and test motors and boats at major carnivals.
The remoteness of North Palm Beach has also been a huge advantage in other ways. A long list of advertisements, television shows and films have been made at North Palm Beach. Although the Club is constantly assisting in the filming of ads and movies with water safety, it is the success of the series “Home & Away” that has made the biggest impact for the Club. Over the last 21 years the Club has provided many types of assistance to the Channel 7 soap opera including in many cases, water and beach based extras.
The exterior of the Surf Club and the beach are the two most recognisable images from “Summer Bay”. North Palm Beach provides the cast and crew with amenities, water safety, use of the 4WD, as well as organises anything the show may need for filming on the beach.
We have developed a reputation as experts on water safety. The Club provides members for the triathlons in Sydney Harbour, rowing on Penrith Lakes and the highlight, ran the water safety for the Triathlon event at the Sydney Olympic Games. A great benefit of membership at North Palm Beach is the small club atmosphere, training is done in small groups and opportunities exist to train as an IRB driver, patrol captain, or even as part of the new Sydney Northern Beaches Jet Ski Rescue Team which North Palm Beach is the home of operations for the northern part of the beaches.
In order to start your training as a life saver or find out more information about what is required just come down to the club on a weekend or public holiday and speak with one of the life savers on the beach who will point you in the right direction.
Or you can contact the club by email at office@northpalmbeach.com.au.
In 2007, North Palm Beach SLSC has announced a partnership with their new “sister club” across the seas in Waterford, Ireland.
Formed just a few years ago in 2005, Waterford boats a great team of Seniors, Juniors and Nippers who have competed (and won) in the Irish national titles as well as going on to represent Ireland at European and World Championships.
With the common goal of saving lives and promoting awareness of water safety in their community, we welcome Waterford SLSC as our Sister Club, and hope that many of their members get the opportunity to experience our North Palm Beach hospitality
Australia marked 100 years of Surf Life Saving in 2007, and North Palm Beach proudly serves as one of 305 surf clubs manning the country’s perimeter and ensuring our beaches remain safe and enjoyable.
As a surf life saving club based in Sydney, Australia, we are affiliated with the following representative bodies:
